The School of Distance Education (SDE) was established to provide opportunities for working adults to obtain a tertiary education. Through this innovative educational approach, working adults are able to undertake undergraduate courses while remaining in full-time employment. It is the pioneer faculty in Malaysia which offers degree programmes through distance education.

Currently, four undergraduate programmes are available via distance education, namely Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts and Management.  Students need to spend a minimum of four years to complete their programme. Print material is the main medium used in the course delivery. It is supplemented by face-to-face meetings during the three-week residential course and other technology-based delivery modes such as the live video-conferencing, the electronic portal and streaming media. Learning and teaching activities, and practical classes are also conducted at the 12 regional centres located throughout the country.

Besides the undergraduate programmes, the SDE also offers postgraduate programmes by research, namely, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Social Science and Doctor of Philosophy. These programmes are offered either full-time or part-time and  candidates are required to undertake a research project under the supervision of the academic staff. The degree is awarded based on the examination of a thesis submitted at the end of the research component.

Currrently,  the SDE has a total of 71 full-time academic staff members, mostly with doctoral qualifications. Apart from teaching undergraduate courses, all members of staff are actively engaged in research projects and capable of providing quality supervision to  postgraduate research students.  Apart from publishing books and modules for the academic programmes, they are also actively involved in research and publications. In addition, the vast professional experience of the academic staff is widely recognised. This is apparent from the various consultancy activities they undertake involving technology transfer and training for both the government agencies and the private sector. Besides, the SDE also has well-trained support staff and  excellent infrastructure. The administrative, teaching, research and training facilities are commendable.

In line with USM's vision of competing at the  global level, the SDE, Universiti Sains Malaysia is committed to maintaining professional excellence. This is  in keeping with Vision 2020, and in an attempt to make the school a centre of excellence in the region.
